In the kitchen, Nora had introduced everyone and invited them to sit down. Kid and Rain came in before everyone sat down for their coffee. Kid’s sisters seemed friendly but reserved toward the group. Kid came over to Sharon and gave her a hug, “Hello, Sharon. How was your trip?”

Sharon Capriotti could have been knocked over with a small puff of wind, but returned his hug. “Fine. How are you?”

“I’m good. Did you have trouble finding Schroeders?”

“Not at all,” Evelyn sniffed. “I was older than you when we left. I knew where it was.”

Kid reached out of give her a hug and she stiffened, “Were you handling livestock? You need to change before you grope me.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t grope you,” Kid chuckled. “Come on Rain, we need to wash the animal germs off our hands before we eat kuchen.”

Evelyn looked at him with disdain and then went to sit down at the table. Nora and Carl exchanged a look and then Carl zeroed in. “So, what brings you ladies out here? From what I heard, you haven’t been back in years.”

“We both have very full lives,” the tall, slim Evelyn Forrest answered condescendingly. “We have too much to do to travel to the prairies.”

Carl laughed, “Well then, I guess we should be honored that you’d share your time with us.”

Grandma cleared her throat and said, “I’ll go tell Kathleen that we’re having coffee.”

Irritated by Evelyn’s attitude, Carl was not about to let up. He instinctively didn’t like Evelyn, and still had Sharon on strict trial. “So, what occurred that spiked your interest at this time?”

“We heard that our home had burned to the ground and had been told it was likely that Harold died in the fire. We came to sort out the estate.”

“Well,” Carl leaned back, “There was a hell of a fire and Kid almost died. Luckily, he survived. It’ll be nice for you to rekindle your relationship with your brother.”

Her hair was brown and Evelyn had brown eyes, now squinting from behind her glasses with more diamonds on frames than anyone in the room wore on their hands. She sniffed, “I guess it’s still worthwhile to talk to Harold. We know he has the wanderlust and won’t want to set down roots. We thought we could take the burden off his shoulders and he could go back to his vagabond life.”

“Hm, didn’t know that.” Carl put some cream in his coffee, “Funny he didn’t mention that to me, since I’m involved in some of his business ventures.”

Kid had just come out of the washroom when he heard Carl say that and almost choked. He gave Carl a glance and Carl winked back at him. Kid could tell that Carl was enjoying interrogating his prey.

“So, what would you two busy ladies do with it? Would you farm it?”

“Oh, gracious no,” the raven-haired Sharon answered. “It would be simply an investment. The mineral rights will someday make it worthwhile.”

“Oh, you’re going to mine coal?”

Evelyn was still scrutinizing Carl, “We were just going to hold onto it for now.
